Beer Styles: Belgian Tripel

As with the Belgian Dubbel, the Tripel was also popularised by Westmalle.

This style is brewed by most trappist breweries in Belgium. The name refers to the fact that the beer was three times as strong as the standard beer brewed by the monastery.

In contrast to a Belgian Dubbel, a Tripel is pale in colour. When tasting it there will be spicy notes of pepper and clove. You will also find fruity esters and a light, almost grainy malt profile. This will add a sweetness, almost honey-like.

Though high in ABV, the alcohol is hidden well and I find these more drinkable than a Dubbel.
