Beer Styles: Belgian Dubbel

The Belgian Dubbel style is a trappist ale and was originally brewed by trappist Abbey Westmalle in 1856.

The style name refers to the fact that the beer was usually twice as strong as the standard beers brewed by the monastery.

When tasting a Dubbel it should be rich and malty. This can add a sweetness to the beer. There should also be dried fruit esters (thin raisin) and a dry finish. This will be balanced by a spicy, peppery yeast character. I often find them to be quite boozy due to the elevated ABV.
