Breweries That I Love: Neptune Brewery
Let's talk about another brewery that I love. Today we're going to be looking at Neptune brewery. Neptune are based in Liverpool. They started in 2015 created by Les and Julie. After running a successful aquatic business for 25 years, Neptune was born out of homebrewing. Their branding has a continued theme around the sea. So expect names based on mythological creatures, aquatic God's oceans and watery concepts.
Their beers are a mix of traditional and more modern. You can see this in the styles that they do and the types of hops that they brew with. The beers are also unfiltered, unpasteurized, and unfined. This makes all of their beers vegan, which is a talking point for them because Neptune feels that beer should be able to be enjoyed by everyone.
Julie is also the founder of Ladies That Beer, which is a social and education group for women who enjoy to drink beer. And Ladies That Beer is in fact the reason that my beer group Women's Pint Club began because I asked Julie for some advice. And her amazing advice for starting a women's beer group was - ‘just do it!’
Neptune brew a wide range of beers. Within their core range they have pales as well as dark beers. For example, they have Abyss which is a oatmeal stout brewed with Willamette hops. It has flavours of coffee and chocolate and a smooth, creamy mouthfeel made from oats.
Also in their core range they have Wooden Ships, which is brewed with Centennial hops. This is an American Pale Ale. It's very refreshing and has flavours of orange, light floral notes and a pine finish from those American hops.
As well as their core range you'll find seasonal versions and rarities. Some of these include Single Handed Sailor, which is a pale ale brewed with Citra and Summit hops. Again, we're going to see orange zest in there and grapefruit. This is perfectly refreshing and sessionable.
I particularly enjoy when I see a really interesting style from Neptune. Ostara is a current bun saison brewed with Mandarina Bavaria hops. I'm really excited to get stuck into this one because I think the mixture of flavours in a saison is going to be amazing.
Other favorite brews of mine from Neptune include Elea, which was brewed with Ladies That Beer as part of International Women's Collaboration Brew Day in 2021. It was a rhubarb American Pale Ale. And it was named after the goddess of compassion because the theme for International Women's Collaboration Brew Day this year was compassion. Perfectly named and it was beautifully tart and fruity. I love to see their fruity beers.
Another of my favorites was Tellus which was a hibiscus and mint wheat beer. You don't see that combination of flavours so it's really interesting to find something with a unusual mix. Look at that colour!
I am really looking forward to being able to go up to Liverpool at some point to try out their tap room and drink their delicious brews on tap. If you'd like to try some Neptune beers if you haven't already, hop onto their webshop here.
