A Conversation With… Three Hills Brewing
We had our first guest on A Woman’s Brew: The Podcast! Tori and I were lucky enough to chat with Andrew from Three Hills Brewing. We talk about what it’s like to set up a tap room during Covid, the impact of Brexit and pianos with beer taps in them! We also introduce our interview feature ‘Can You Name Your Own Beers?’
Thanks for sharing a beer with us Andrew – they were excellent! If you want to grab some, pop over to their webshop here. And if you want to hear about all of that, take a listen!
While we chatted to Andrew we sampled a couple of their amazing beers.
Forbidden Fruit Yuzu
A yuzu, if you haven’t come across it before, is an Asian fruit with clean, citrus flavours and aromas. It is beautiful in sour beers and this is no exception.
With a sharp, spritzy yuzu citrus aroma, this beer draws you in from the start. There is a light, grainy malt background to the aroma that balances the sharpness. I was surprised to find it lightly carbonated but this complimented the tart yuzu flavour and produces a clean, crisp, very drinkable beer.
If someone were starting out with sour beers I’d direct them to this as it isn’t puckering or overpowering but opens up the gateway to these refreshing beer styles.
BPAVK Hazelnut Praline
The BPAVK range showcases some massive stouts with dessert and barrel flavour profiles. The thing that struck me about Hazelnut Praline was that the aroma followed through into the flavour. You get a huge hit of hazelnut and milk chocolate. There is a smoky edge that pairs nicely with the nuttiness and makes you think of burnt sugar and nut brittles. This beer is only very slightly carbonated but is then thick and viscose, exactly as a massive stout should be. A light bitterness balances with smoky, nutty and chocolate flavours rounded out with a final boozy warmth and a chocolate linger. This is 10% but does not show it’s strength - be warned that this is a dangerously delicious beer!
