Beer Styles: Flanders Red

Flanders Red is a distinctive style of the west Flanders region of Belgium.

They are symbolised by the Rodenbach brewery are are aged in oak barrels for two years. These barrels house bacteria that sour the beer and give it a complex balsamic vinegar characteristic.

When tasting a Flanders Red you will find sour, fruity and red wine like flavours balanced by a malty body. You may get fruit flavours of plum, black cherry and red currant. My favourites in this style have a sweet balsamic vinegar bite.
