Build Your Beer Vocabulary

Express the flavours of your favourite beverage with ease and confidence using the perfect words to describe beer.

Do you love drinking beer?

Are you a woman in the beer community that lacks confidence in what she is tasting?

I was like you!  I wanted to know more about where the fascinating flavours and aromas were coming from in the beers I enjoyed.  What did dank even mean anyway?!  I read lots of books and drank A LOT of beer to develop my palate.  But now through sensory trainings and beer tastings I can take you on the journey to build your beer vocabulary together and always have the perfect words to describe beer!

Here is what you will learn with me while building your list of words to describe beer:

  • When you first sign up:

Before our first live lesson, there are some video lessons to get you started building your bank of words to describe beer. Learn professional beer tasting techniques, take a self-assessment of where you are at currently and learn about mouthfeel and appearance.

  • Live Lesson 1 – Hops:

In our first live lesson, we look at hops and what they add to your beer. We will complete a sensory exercise trying foods that have the same descriptors as hops and add to your bank of words to describe beer. Think citrus and tropical fruits to start!

  • Live Lesson 2 – Malts

In our second live lesson, we will look at malt and how it is the backbone of your beer. We will complete our second sensory exercise with foods that replicate malt flavours and aromas, continuing to build your palate. Add words to describe beer with such as chocolate, coffee, biscuit and cracker.

  • Live Lesson 3 – Fermentation Flavours

Our third lesson looks at fermentation flavours and all the ways yeast and bacteria (yep, you read that right!) affect your beers. This one really divides the room! Our last sensory exercise will help you understand what esters and phenols are and introduce you to wild and spontaneous beers. Your bank of words to describe beer will be put to the test with fruity, peppery and even barnyard!

  • Live Lesson 4 – Celebration!

In our final live lesson, we will celebrate everything you have learned and added to your bank of words to describe beer! I'll talk about off flavours and recap anything you want to go back over, while also giving you the chance to exercise your new tasting skills on beers you choose.

This course is for you if:

Frequently Asked Questions

  • • Do I need to drink beer to take the course?

Ideally yes! That’s the fun part, but you could get non-alcoholic beers or just take part in the sensory exercises without drinking any beer. You can watch the sessions at a later date as well.

  • • What if I can’t make one of the live sessions?

No problem! The live sessions are recorded and are available to play back in the Facebook group or on the course platform.

  • • Can I join if I don’t have Facebook?

I run the live sessions through a Facebook group, so unfortunately if you are not on Facebook you don’t be able to attend the live lessons. But! All the content is available to watch back any time on the course platform.

  • • Do I need to buy special/fancy/expensive beers to take part?

No, all the beers I picked for the course can be easily bought in a supermarket. You can choose whichever beers you wish, however, as long as they meet the objectives of that week’s lesson.
